Description
Snakes and Ladders board game
Snakes and Ladders board, originally known as Moksha Patam, is an ancient Indian board game considered today as an all world classic.
It is played between two or more players on a game board having numbered, grid squares. A number of "ladders" and "snakes" are depicted on the edge, each connecting two specific edge squares.
The object of the game is to navigate a game piece, according to dice rolls, from the beginning (lower square) to the finish (upper square), aided or hindered by ladders and snakes, respectively.
The Snakes and Ladders game is a simple race based on pure luck, and is popular with young children. The historical version has its roots in morality lessons, on which the progression of a player's card represented a life path complicated by virtue (ladders) and vices (snakes).
Playing snakes and ladders helps children begin to recognise the numbers they hear and speak in daily life by combining the written symbol with the sense of value they understand in their mind. Children also learn counting strategies, which form the basis of addition and subtraction, such as putting one number in their head and adding another or taking one away, or using their fingers to reach the next number.
